Bass Station Hits the Streets of Hornsey

More than 25 young people from Hornsey have experienced what it feels like to be a DJ or MC for a day and discovered new talents as The British DJ & MC Academy’s mobile unit stopped at Campsbourne Road over the Easter holidays.

The two events were organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust in partnership with L&Q, Metropolitan Housing and Family Mosaic.

The events took place at Campsbourne Road, which is in the centre of a large social housing estate. During the sessions, the experienced and passionate crew from The British DJ & MC Academy was on hand to give the local residents of all ages the opportunity to try out their DJing, MCing, lyric writing and mixing talents in their mobile unit called The Bass Station.

Omari, 16, said: “I think the DJ & MC Academy is a great institution which allows young people to have an opportunity to! do things which the community does not provide. The DJ & MC Academy could be used as a distraction to pull youths away from crime. They effected my life by allowing me to get the message across about the black youth crime & justice system.”

DJ Trickles, who has been with The British DJ & MC Academy since the beginning, added: “We are the fastest growing youth arts organisation in London and the team is pioneering a new movement by channeling music through developing and promoting young talent, as well as helping young people to build confidence and to gain credibility. The event was a great success, everybody got really engaged had a good time.”

The events are part of an ongoing 12-week project and are organised by Circle 33 Housing Trust as part of a larger programme of learning and leisure opportunities to enhance the Life Chances of young people in the area.

Sussan Rassoulie, Community Development Partnership Manager for Circle 33, said: “We! know from our work with young people that many of them are interested in finding out more about a career in music, so are bringing the experts to them so they can have a go and find out more.

“We are very pleased with how everyone got together and involved. We are now hoping to raise funds to enable a number of the young people to take part in a recognised accredited course that can form part of their educational achievements.”
